Mama's Gardenia

The season between spring and summer; just before the Hydrangea have bloomed. What a pleasant season. The beautiful white Gardenia and its purely sweet fragrance spreads far and wide.Perhaps there are many of you that are more likely to know it by the name “Kuchinashi”.

Even if the Gardenia has blossomed in a hedge outside, or a stock has been bought from a flower shop, almost certainly there are countless small bugs attached like small dots. Although I am particularly attracted to this scent,

for that reason I personally do not want to bring it into my home in case of infestation. I do not have many emotional feelings or anecdotes attached to this flower; just one.

My mother requested that the bouquet she would hold for her wedding day, was to be a bundle of flowers made solely of Gardenia. When I was young, me and my sister would pull out my parents’ wedding photographs from the closet, and every time we’d look through them, my mother would tell us the story about her request for a bouquet of Gardenia flowers.

By no means is she a person who is deeply versed in gardening or flowers, or if you like, she is indifferent about them. She is a person whose familiarity with flower names is as limited as anyone else’s. And yet she did not seem to be the type of person who would be fixated on a specific type of flower for her wedding bouquet. Still to this day it is a mystery to me.

Since I was a child, I noticed a lot of peculiar things about her. If she refused something, she would refuse it at all costs, and if she loved something, she would always persist, whether rain or spears would fall.

She was the type of person to be stubborn in a way that would make people turn their heads in confusion, but for all other things, she was completely indifferent. Inside her exists an intuitive yet absolute duality between what is “acceptable” or “not”.

Without a doubt she is a Scorpio.

I think there are many people who are reluctant to judge a person’s personality based on their star sign. But at this age, when I objectively monitor her behavior and state of mind, that is the most convincing conclusion for me; she is a Scorpio. It is a bit eccentric to say, but for some reason I feel that Scorpio are the most reliable among people.

Perhaps my mother taught me that.

Why was my mother so fixated on having those Gardenia flowers in her bouquet? Even now I still ask her, but she never gives me a clear reason. She will always say something like “Hmm, I guess I just liked them?”. Whether it was intuitive or not, she never logically explains the reason or provides proof. But on her wedding day, I am certain that was the only thing she was adamant about.

In the end, whether it was the season or not, the long-sought bouquet of Gardenia was never held.

And so sometimes I imagine the day when she is called to heaven, and as we part ways I will offer her the Gardenia, whether it is the season or not, even if it is just one flower.

And like the phrase “Dead men tell no tales” (shinin ni kuchinashi), the Gardenia or otherwise known as “Kuchinashi” would be the perfect flower for those whose final moment has come.
